The Moors Castle in Sintra Portugal blew me away with the amazing views!

Moors Castle – A Castle In The Sky

The Moors Castle is set high in the mountains of a storybook-like town called Sintra which sparks the imagination of all those who visit. Many people visit Sintra as a day trip from Lisbon Portugal.

The medieval castle was built in the 8th and 9th centuries by the Moors from North Africa. Throughout the centuries and after many battles, the castle was finally captured by the Portuguese. Unfortunately, the Moors Castle ended up in near ruins after a great earthquake in 1755.

During an era of Romanticism, King Ferdinand II who was both creative and well educated in the arts restored the castle in the 19th century. King Ferdinand acquired many estates in Sintra including the famous Pena Palace that can be seen from the Moors Castle. It is said that the King’s interest in the Moors Castle was partly due to the fact he wanted to be able to view the castle from his Fairytale like estate of Pena Palace.

The castle overlooks the entire town of Sintra as it sits high up in the Sintra Mountains. Climbing along the fortified stone walls to the top will reward you with breathtaking views over the Sintra Valley. Once you get to the top and begin to watch the clouds pass by ahead, it can feel as if you are floating in a castle in the sky. The views are truly amazing!

I was truly in awe looking over the castle walls. I could see the mountains, beautiful palaces in the distance and it was no wonder this place was an inspiration for artists and King Ferdinand during the era of Romanticism.

Be ready to climb lots of stairs for the best views.

I must admit I got dizzy a few times during the climb up to the top of the castle and had to remind myself to take it easy in the midst of my excitement! Needless to say, the climb is not for those afraid of heights.

If you get a chance to visit Sintra, enjoy creating your own story in this imaginative and Fairytale-like town.
